Frequently Asked Questions
How often does the "Pride" rehearse?
We spend a week of rehearsal (band camp) prior to the start of school learning important musical and visual basics, as well as halftime and pre-game shows. This is also a time for socializing (outside of rehearsal) and bonding as a team. After the start of school, the band rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 - 2:50, and Friday from 2:00 - 2:50. Gameday consists of a brief warmup and run through prior to the game.
Can I live in a residence hall during band camp?
Yes. Arrangements are made each year for students living in residence halls. Early move in is permitted before the start of camp, and dining services are also available. A small fee covers costs for this additional week.
How much is being a band member going to cost?
Contrasting from many other college and high school marching bands, fees to participate in the "Pride" are low. Other than important uniform maintenance and cleaning fees, students are responsible for purchasing uniform marching shoes ($30.00) and gloves (nominal cost). Optional expenses include purchasing concession at football games. Those who opt to stay in campus housing during the band camp week will pay a fee for room and board. Incidentally, lunch is provided by the Dana School of Music each day of camp at no cost to the student.
I'm not a music major, aren't college bands for just music majors?
NO! There is a place for students from ALL MAJOR in the Marching Pride. We expect music majors to perform in the band; however, we continually seek non-music majors. In addition to important musical contributions, students from other majors provide balance, perspective, and "outside the box" thinking that has helped our organization to be so successful.
My high school marching band rehearsed and performed all the time, I feel burnt out. Why should I make this commitment?
Comparatively, the YSU Marching Pride requires less rehearsal and performance time than many bands at comparable schools. Because there are many benefits to joining the group, and a significantly less time commitment, you get the best of both worlds!
